Taste and See That the Lord Is Good: Finding God's Love Through Food

"Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him." — Psalm 34:8

There is something beautifully sacred about gathering around a table. The aroma of fresh bread, the sweetness of ripe fruit, the warmth of herbal tea, and the colors of a flourishing garden all remind us that God is a loving Provider. From the very beginning of Scripture, food has been one of God's gifts—a tangible expression of His care, generosity, and desire to nourish both our bodies and our souls.

The Bible begins in a garden filled with abundance. God created trees bearing fruit, herbs, grains, and every seed-bearing plant before He created mankind. His first provision was not merely survival; it was beauty, nourishment, and delight. Creation itself reflects the goodness of its Creator.

Throughout the Bible, food becomes a picture of God's faithfulness. He fed the Israelites with manna in the wilderness when there seemed to be no hope. He sustained the prophet Elijah with bread and water during a season of exhaustion. Jesus multiplied loaves and fish to feed thousands, demonstrating that God sees both our spiritual and physical needs. Even after His resurrection, Jesus prepared breakfast for His disciples by the sea—a quiet reminder that His love is often found in the simplest moments.

Food in Scripture is never just about eating. It is about fellowship, gratitude, healing, celebration, and hospitality. Sharing a meal creates space for conversation, encouragement, and community. Around the table, hearts are softened, prayers are offered, stories are shared, and faith is strengthened.

God has also filled creation with plants, herbs, fruits, vegetables, grains, and spices that support health and wellness. Fresh herbs add fragrance and nourishment. Fruits are rich in sweetness and refreshment. Whole foods remind us that God's design is thoughtful and generous. While food is not a replacement for medical care, choosing wholesome foods can be one meaningful way to care for the bodies God has entrusted to us.

Perhaps this is why gardens have always carried such significance throughout the Bible. Gardens are places of growth, patience, beauty, and hope. Seeds planted in faith eventually bear fruit. In many ways, our hearts are like gardens too. As we spend time with God, He cultivates love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—the beautiful fruit of a life rooted in Him.

Psalm 34:8 invites us to do more than simply know about God; it invites us to experience Him. "Taste and see" is deeply personal. Just as we savor a nourishing meal, we are invited to savor God's presence, His promises, and His unfailing love. Every meal can become an opportunity to pause, give thanks, and remember that every good gift comes from Him.

Whether you are harvesting herbs from your garden, baking homemade bread, preparing a nourishing soup, or simply enjoying a quiet cup of tea, let these ordinary moments become acts of worship. Gratitude transforms even the simplest meal into a reminder of God's abundant goodness.

Today, may your table be filled not only with wholesome food but also with peace, joy, and thankfulness. May every garden bloom with hope, every shared meal strengthen relationships, and every cup poured remind you of the One who lovingly provides all that we need.

Because when we truly taste and see that the Lord is good, we discover that His goodness satisfies far more than our hunger—it nourishes our hearts, renews our spirits, and fills our lives with lasting hope.
