"Give us this day our daily bread." — Matthew 6:11 (KJV)
There is something special about baking homemade sourdough bread. Made with simple, wholesome ingredients and time-honored fermentation, every loaf is a reminder that the best things in life are often the simplest. Whether you choose organic ingredients or conventional pantry staples, this recipe creates a flavorful artisan loaf with a crisp crust and a soft, chewy crumb.

Organic Sourdough Bread Recipe
Ingredients
100 grams active sourdough starter (organic if desired)
350 grams filtered water
500 grams organic bread flour
10 grams sea salt
Instructions
In a large bowl, mix the sourdough starter with the water until dissolved.
Add the flour and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
Let the dough rest for 30–45 minutes (autolyse).
Add the sea salt and knead or stretch and fold until fully incorporated.
Cover and let the dough rise for 4–6 hours, performing a stretch and fold every 30 minutes during the first 2 hours.
Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it in a floured proofing basket.
Refrigerate overnight (8–16 hours) for the best flavor.
Preheat your oven to 475°F (246°C) with a Dutch oven inside.
Carefully place the dough into the hot Dutch oven, score the top with a sharp blade, cover, and bake for 30 minutes.
Remove the lid and bake another 15–20 minutes until the crust is deep golden brown.
Cool completely before slicing.
What's in Organic Sourdough?
Organic sourdough is made with ingredients that are grown and produced without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or artificial fertilizers. Typical ingredients include:
Organic bread flour
Organic sourdough starter
Filtered water
Sea salt
The natural fermentation process creates its signature tangy flavor and helps develop the bread's texture without commercial yeast.
You Don't Have to Keep It Organic
This recipe works beautifully with conventional ingredients as well. If organic products aren't available or fit outside your budget, simply substitute:
Regular bread flour
Regular sourdough starter
Tap or filtered water
Table salt, kosher salt, or sea salt
The same baking process applies, and you'll still enjoy a delicious homemade sourdough loaf.
